We’ve all heard the old saying: Never assume – you’ll just make an ass out of you and me.
It’s a neat little saying, and not just because it cleverly uses the spelling of the word “assume” to convey its message. Rather, it’s a saying that concisely articulates the perils of making assumptions, which are, afterall, nothing more than assertions about the world based on our prejudices and preferences. Instead of suspending judgement until we are in full possession of the facts, we presume that a certain set of conditions prevails and proceed accordingly.
